Original family home: County Huang, Shandong Province.
In May 2nd, 1953, born in Changchun, Jilin Province. My father worked in the First Automobile Works, Changchun, as vice-president before the Cultural Revolution. My mother was a staffer in Changchun Film Studio.
In 1966 when the Cultural Revolution started, I just finished elementary school, and did not go to middle school.
In 1968, my father, declared as a Capitalist-roader and Soviet-revisionist spy, committed suicide after his long prison life.
In 1969, with my mother, who was just set free from the Niu-Peng (Cowsheds; the place where intellectuals and capitalist roaders were confined in humiliation to do forced labour), I went to the countryside, where I lived and worked in a production team for four years, and there I began to write poems.
In 1973, I became a "worker-peasant-soldier student", and majored in automile manufacture in Jilin Industry College.
In 1975, the idea "A Successive Multi-Level Electoral System" occured to me and I had been working on it till now.
In 1977, after graduation, I was assigned to the First Automile Works in Changchun, first as a mechanic, and then a technician at the workshop. At the same time, I began to write novels and film scripts.
In 1978, I was transferred, at my own will, to the Second Automile Works in Hubei Province, trying to apply computer to business management. During the time, I participated in the "Democratic Wall Movement", and my first novel "A Perpetual-motion-machine Fan" was published in "Today".
In 1980, I left the factory by way of secondment, wrote film scripts, and worked with a film-producing group, breaking away from the establishment.
In 1983, I began to write my first saga novel "The Gate of Heaven".
In 1984, with a raft made up of inner tubes of trucks, I floated alone about 1,200 miles from the headwaters of the Yellow River, traversing the Tibetan Area in the upper reach of the Yellow River, which drew my attention to the Tibetan problem.
In 1985-6, writing " Drifting ", a book of actual events.
In 1988, being a member of the Association of Chinese Writers.
In 1988, I began to write the novel "Yellow Peril", which was published in 1991 and accepted by The Asian Weekly as one of the one hundred most influential Chinese Novels, ranking 41.
In 1991-4, writing a dissertation "Dissolving power: A Successive Multi-Level Electoral System", published in 1998.
In 1994, I initiated with other people "Friends of Nature", which was the first civil enviornmentalistic organization in China, and had made plans for and participated in several long-term projects since then.
In 1995-6, writing the book "Sky Burial: the Fate of Tibet", after visiting Tibet and Tibetan areas in other provinces ten times, spending about two years altogether in Tibet, covering all branches of Tibetan areas.
In 1999, being arrested because of so-called "stealing secret information" when doing field research in Xinjiang, and kept in custody for 42 days. Later I wrote the report "Days In Xinjiang", which was spreaded through internet.

In 2001, I gave a declaration openly, breaking away from Association of Chinese Writers.
