Chongqing, China, 1979 and I’m 9 years old. Where should I nail down “the Good Student Certificate”? I don’t want it to be too low; if so, turning my body in bed or playing might touch the certificate. I don’t want it to be too high either, like close to the ceiling. I need to see it clearly on the floor, which is east to the bed. Horizontally, it should be at the center of the bed, and vertically, it should three feet away from the bed, and it should be over one yard from the ceiling. Good, it is here. I press the pin to the top left corner of the yellow paper, the certificate, my left hand stays there. Then my body moves to the left, and the right hand with the hammer moving to the left.

Having gathered some courage, I’m moving the hammer with my right hand toward the pushpin cap held by my left hand. Pa—, a light sound, right on the pushpin cap, without hitting my left hand. Good, pa—, pa—，pa—，pa—, more poundings. Now the pushpin has obviously moved into the wall, good. pa—，pa—，pa—，pa—，pa—，pa—，pa—，pa—, the pushpin, about half an inch in diameter, is almost the same layer with the whitish wall, good enough. It shouldn’t fall out. I move my both hands away from the paper. The yellow stays awry on the whitish wall without the least hint to fall down, good.
I take another pushpin from the table, move it to the top right corner of the yellow paper, with left hand holding up the paper and pressing the pushpin to that corner and the hammer on my right hand pounding on the pushpin cap. pa—，pa—，two poundings on the pushpin cap, without hitting my left hand, good. pa—，pa—，pa—，pa—，more poundings. The pushpin has obviously moved into the wall, good. pa—，pa—，pa—，pa—，pa—，pa—，pa—，pa—, the pushpin, about half an inch in diameter, is almost the same layer with the whitish wall, good enough. It shouldn’t fall out. I move my both hands away from the paper. The yellow stays even on the whitish wall without the least hint to fall down, good.
Then with less difficulty, I’ve pounded the pushpins in the bottom left and the bottom right corners of the yellow paper. Now the yellow paper stays on the wall, motionless. I step down the bed, stand on the floor to the east of the bed, 6 feet away from the yellow paper. I see clearly “Good Student”, the orange characters on the yellow paper. Every character is over an inch long. The certificate looks even on the wall. All right, I’ve made it. I put back the hammer into the first drawer of the flat closet.
Alas, this semester, actually the whole academic year of my Second Grade is over. Some people say, “Why do you sigh?” There are many things we should sigh. Just the Vietnam War in February and March of 1979. A war started just by a sentence of the Communist leader. Half a million troops crossed the border to fight without asking our opinion. You say I’m just 9 years old, too young to ask, but my father, my mother in their 40s, Communist Party Members, and no one asked their opinion either. Such an event without people’s vote and is done. I truly feel this country is formidable and living in this country is dangerous.
