Wei Liu Memoir 1.65: My Co-Desk Female Xiong in Grade Two 1)

   Democratic People/Awakened People/Common People Wei LiuSeptember 4, 2014

Chongqing, China, 1978 and I’m 8 years old. In Grade Two, my co-desk, the one sitting next to me, is a female named Xiong. Xiong and I have been in the same class since Grade One at Jialin School. She looks tall in our class, taller than me, kind of strong, but not fat. Her skin looks kind of black, my skin looks white. In most times, I don’t like black skin, but Xiong’s black skin looks decent black and I like it. I even feel strange about my propensity. Her face is beautiful, the energetic style, with two sparkling eyes, like too profound black jades. Her grades in class are pretty good. Among our 40-odd-people class, she holds about No. 7 position.

Now the class is over and we have 10 minutes break. I don’t know how, sitting on the seats, Xiong and I start to fight each other. She gives me a strike and I give her a strike. My little fist lands twice on her dark green shirt and she strikes me as well. After a while, she stops striking me, burying her head into her two arms.

“Wei, you strike her to tears,” my good friend Ao, a male, says.

“Is she really crying? She has struck me too,” I say and stare at Xiong. Her dark blue figure resting on the desk moves back and forth, but there is no sound of crying.

Xiong and I remain on the seat. I move my right arm from behind/outside and surround her waist, feeling her, looking what response she might have. No response. She still buries her dark hair in her two dark green sleeves. I look prettier than most people, including Xiong. So when I physically feel her, I feel nothing wrong about it. Of course in class those whom I want to touch will not be more than 4.

“This is called Outside Moon,” I say to the audience Ao. Because our Chinese book says the Chinese character “月” for moon has the meaning of flesh, human flesh. So I call my arm feeling Xiong’s waist from behind/outside as Outside Moon. Once more I move my right arm surround her waist from behind/outside, feeling her and seeing what reaction she might have. There is no reaction. She still buries her black hair deeply into her dark green sleeves.

She assumes motionless like this. Maybe she intends to do so, no reason for it. I move my right arm from front/inside to surround Xiong’s waist, saying to Ao, “This is called Inside Moon.”

“This is so intimate and you are not afraid,” Ao says beside us.

Why should I be afraid? I don’t feel I’ve taken advantage of Xiong. I look white, petite body, clear contour of the face, with a tall nose and a gentle face. Xiong looks bigger than me. And during the fighting, she always cries, and gives no reaction to my words or activities, hard to understand. No, it cannot go like this. I want to see her reaction.
