Chongqing, China, 1978 and I’m 8 years old. Walking, walking, walking, I’m at the middle part of this street. There are several merchants selling plums, also using a white bag, with green plums in it. Here there is also a stall to read the picture stories, where I see the complete set of Three Kingdom Legend, altogether 48 books, blue cover. I love it. I cannot read those picture stories, having no money, and I can only read the magazine Little Kids at home.
Now from the back of the picture story stall walk out groups of elementary school pupils. They are the pupils of Guihuayuan Elementary School. Farther 100 yards along the blue brick walk is that elementary school. This is the south side of the street. The opposite side, the north side of the street sees a noodle stall. It just has about 50 square feet, barely put down a table for the customer to sit down to eat noodles. The pot the merchant uses to boil the noodle is about 20 inches in diameter and 20 inches high, cylinder-shape huge pot. Now the merchant or the boss opens the lid of it, immediately lots of white steams comes out, and my face feels the hot air. If I wore glasses, I could not see anything at that moment. The boss holds by his left hand, a dark brown bamboo bowl that drains water out and by his right hand a pair of chopsticks that is two feet long, starting to take the noodles from the huge pot into the bamboo bowl. That customer orders one third pound of noodles and the boss takes out all the noodles in the huge pot, with the first time a full of bamboo bowl and the second time half of it.
Walking, walking, walking, leaving there, in front I see a stall of the baked flat bread. A customer orders a baked flat bread and the boss puts a piece of flat bread onto the inner surface of the giant stove. The stove has a diameter over 3 feet, depth over 3 feet. At the bottom is all the burning charcoal. It is new and surprising to see the flat bread directly baked on the inner surface of the charcoal stove. After about 10 minutes, the boss wearing gloves, takes the flat bread off the inner surface. Now the cooked or the baked flat bread looks oval, light brown, about 8 inches long, 6 inches wide and half an inch thick. The seasoning of it is at most some salt and shouldn’t have other flavors.
Passing that baked flat bread stall, I see groups of pupils coming into the street from an alley. They are the pupils of Datianwan Elementary School. At the corner there is a small grocery store. Occasionally I can find 8 Chinese cents in my pocket and buy a pack of haw slices, which has about 6 slices, with each slice about 3 inches long and 1.2 inches wide. On the dark red haw slice, there is some white color. That is the sprinkled white sugar.
Coming down from that store, I see a charcoal depot at the south side of the street. On the 40 square feet ground, it is all black charcoal. Sometimes there are five or six workers here shoveling the charcoals. The charcoals here should supply enough energy for the snacks on the street. The charcoal store does not have obvious soot.
