The Burma News International (BNI) requested strongly on April 17,2007 the Indian authorities to immediately withdraw its order of closing the main office of Mizzima News Group, in Viskaspuri, New Delhi, India. People are afraid that India’s fame as “the biggest Asian democratic country” will be thus damaged .
The Burma News International (BNI) consists of 10 independent network members of Burma: 1. Mizzima News Group，2. Khonumthung News Group，3. Kaladan Press Network，4. Narinjara News，5. Kao Wao News Group，6. Kachin News Group，7. Independent Mon News Agency，8. Shan Herald Agency for News，9. Network Media Group，10. Kantarawaddy Times。
Mizzima, being established in August 1998, is an independent and non-profitable news agency. In accordance with the Indian and International press regulation, Mizzima publishes independent news and commentary on Burma. It has been reporting consistently about Burmese junta’s genocidal war against all ethnic peoples ,the human rights situation in whole country, including violations against the media and journalists by the Burmese military junta.
Mizzima covers and criticizes also the current policies of China, India and South East Asia towards Burma’s junta. It helps currently, too, as translator for the anti-junta Arakan and Karen rebels on trial in Kolkata, India, for allegedly supplying weapons to Indian insurgents.
There is strong suspicion that the raid was related to the above-mentioned facts.
