Statement on Preventing Wang Yiliang's Entry into China for His Mother’s Funeral
The Independent Chinese PEN Center (ICPC) was informed that the exiled writer Wang, Yiliang who’s mother Ms. Shen, Huizhu passed away in Shang Hai on February 23rd, 2016. Mr. Wang is in mourning. The ICPC expresses the deep sadness to the loss of Ms. Shen, Huizhu.
Wang, Yiliang immediately rushed to Hong Kong for his mother’s funeral after getting the bad news. But Wang’s applying for an entry visa was denied by the authority. Mr. Wang was in his extreme grief during this period of time.
Wang, Yiliang is a literary writer and he has never become a member of any political organizations in neither China nor foreign countries. In 2000, due to participating in the private organization, “The Chinese Cultural Renaissance Movement”,he was arrested and jailed for two years in Shang Hai. He fled to the United States after his release from prison. Since then he has forced to live apart from his family. It has been very difficult for Mr. Wang to plan a family reunion due to the reason in exile.
Wang, Yiliang is one of the earliest PEN members. He and another famous poet Meng Lang pioneered the Pen Webzine "Writing for Freedom" and had released 100 editing journals during the period from 2005 to 2013. It does have relations with Wang’s huge contributions to it.
Mr. Wang has been denied entry into China for three times, but at this moment, a son has permanently lost his dearest mother, the ICPC calls for human rights for Mr. Wang, Yiliang to attend his mother’s funeral. We urge the Chinese Government and the relevant departments of Shang Hai to give a visa to Mr. Wang, Yiliang or letting him return home as soon as possible.
We hope that Wang, Yiliang and his family can release their grief soon!
