Chongqing, China, 1979 and I’m 9 years old. I put down my telescope and return to March 1979 in which I’m a student of the 2nd Grade of Datianwan Elementary School. On one afternoon in March, it is sunshine outside and our classroom looks quite dim. The air in Chongqing is not good. The month of March is not too bad. The afternoon classes start around 2:30 pm and the second class is Chinese.

“Ding—, ding—, ding—,” the bell rings to announce the class is over. Ms. Ji sits by the podium. Usually she stands to give the lesson and now she sits down, seeming to plan to detain us students long today. At home, I do not have much fun. My Mom and Dad do not like me to draw, play chess, or read, though they subscribe Little Friends for me. My Mom no longer plays accordion. But I still want to leave the school and go home.
Now it is past 4:00 pm and the classroom is quite dim. Ms. Ji still sits motionless behind the podium in a chair, in a purple shirt, wearing a pair of black glasses. Opposite to her are us 40-odd students, in clothes of varied colors, soundless, waiting to see what is in her mind.
“Students, today let’s talk about a fundamental thing, why do you come to school to study?” Ji says, looking at us. Both the teachers and we students speak Sichuan Language, which is like Mandarin.
“We study for revolution,” “We study for the Four Modernizations of Agriculture, Industry, Science and Military,” “We study for ourselves,”……The classroom is filled up with a mixture of several different sounds.
“Now all of us speak about this one by one. When you speak, you stand up. Start from the first row by the door,” Ji says, pointing at the door.
Actually I don’t know how to answer this. I do not want to come to school. But if I do not come, I think my Dad and Mom will strike and will not feed me. But can I answer it like this? Just say, “I do not want to go to school and want to stay at home, drawing, playing chess, but if I don’t go school, my Dad and Mom will strike and will not feed me.” If that is my answer, then I will face serious consequence. The teacher will definitely blame me on low thinking and will report it to my Dad and Mom, who will give me serious punishment. China is just like so. Telling the truth is usually not welcomed by the high officials and their followers. They want to hear the good words on education, science, life, security and etc. I dare not speak out what is in my mind. In class, those students who bring up the poor answer are likely to receive punishment. A good thing is that my seat is in the 4th row of the classroom. The classroom has 7 rows and each row has 6 students. I have some time to see what the classmates answer in front of me and then I may pick up one version looking safest to answer that question.
