   1978年重庆,我8岁了。这天我走到两路口的跳伞塔,想起我1977年画的跳伞塔的画,现在画笔也放下了,真是好伤心哦。看看那里没有人练跳伞,我就走进那门。眼前淡黄色的沙在午后的阳光下有些耀眼。小小的沙子触到我穿着塑料凉鞋的双脚,暖暖的。穿过40米的黄沙,我到了约40米高的跳伞塔下。周围没有人,我觉得安全,我有话要说。看看脚下的黄沙,看看头上一半的淡黄色高塔,一半的蓝天白云,我坐下来对着周围这片淡黄色的沙说话。

   Chongqing, China, 1978 and I’m 8 years old. Today I walk to the Parachuting Tower at Lianglukou, recalling of the paintings I made in 1977 on this parachuting tower. Now one year after entering the school, my brush is put away, breaking my heart. Looking no one practicing parachuting now, I walk through the gate. The light yellow sand under the afternoon sunshine looks kind of dazzling. Little sands touch my two feet in the plastic sandal, warm. Walking across 45 yards of yellow sand, I’m right under the parachute tower 45 yards high. Nobody is around. I feel safe and have words to say. Looking to the yellow sand under my foot, looking to the light yellow parachuting tower occupying half the sky, looking to the blue sky and the white clouds occupying another half the sky, I sit down and talk to the light yellow sand around.

   “During my Grade One at school from 1977 to 1978, I have been thrown into the battlefield of Entrance Examination to College in China, called Grand Exam. After one year, my painting brush has been put away, has not learned how to play Chinese chess, have had no time watching people playing Mahjong. Every day from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, 12 hours are on the study for that battlefield of Grand Exam. My Mom does not play accordion any more.

   “老师,父母说学习为了竞争,为了物质/挣钱,要打败别人,成为强者才能生存。这不就是说中国是一个弱肉强食,人吃人的社会吗?为什么这些人不起来打碎这个人吃人的社会制度,不起来打碎这掠夺全民土地,全民福利的抢人制度?人生的意义不就是有吃有住,下几盘中国象棋,打几盘麻将,听几个故事吗?需要这么争斗不断,哭喊不断吗?

   “Teachers, parents have been telling us that study is for competition, for material/money, for defeating others, only the strong can survive. Doesn’t mean that China is a society in which the strong inflict the weak, people eat people? Why these people do not rise up to remove the people-eat-people social system, to remove the people-robbing system of no one having the land or welfare? Isn’t life meaning having a living place, plenty food, playing chess games and having stories to listen? Should it involve constant competition and constant tears?

   “如果让这个奴隶制度/抢人制度继续,最该被保护的我们几岁的儿童都不会有好日子过,何况其它人?我不要成为强者,我是弱者,弱的人。我不要打败别人,我要普天下的人都公平愉快地生活,中国人已经经历了反右,文革,高考等太多的角斗场,流下了太多的血泪。小沙子,小沙子,你让全国人民知道这些真相,真理,救中国,好不好?”

   “If we let the slavery/people-robbing system continue, even we several years old children cannot have good time, other people’s time can only be worse. No, I don’t want to be the strong. I am weak, a weak person. I don’t want to defeat others; I want all people to lead a fair and happy life. Chinese people have already gone through too many battlefields, including Rightist-Opposition, Cultural Revolution, Grand Exam, have shed so many tears. Little sand, little sand, can you let all people in China be aware of these truths and help saving our nation?”

   说完,我鼻子一酸,泪水流了下来,滴到下面的沙子上,沙子由淡黄色变成了褐色。有时候我想拉拉沙子的手,摇它一摇,让它帮助我们救中国。我有时候拉着我妈妈的手摇她,但她一般是不为所动。我再对小沙子说一遍我的心声。

   Having pouring out my voice to the little sand, I feel sour in my nose and tears flow along my cheeks and fall onto the sand, making the sand change from light yellow to brown. Sometimes I want to hold the hand of the sand, shaking it a couple of time, asking it to help us saving China. Sometimes I hold my Mom’s hand and shake it a couple of time, but usually it does not move her. I pour out one more time my voice to the little sand.
